About Us
Founded by cinematographer James Tocher in 1999, Skylab has a 20+ year legacy, going back to the early days of the digital revolution. Starting as DFG (Digital Film Group), the company provided “film out” for independents who were shooting on DV formats and blowing up to 35mm for festivals and distribution.  In 2008 the company became Vancouver’s first full service Digital Intermediate house and rebranded itself as DFC (Digital Film Central).
Known in the industry as “Central”, the company provided ARRI Film Scanning, Baselight Color Grading and ARRI Laser “film-out” for everyone from indies to major Hollywood studios for many years; working on such titles as Elysium, Chappie, War for the Planet of the Apes, Life of Pi, and many others.
The company was also world-renowned for its Relativity (later Dark Energy) software for film de-graining and “texturizing” as well as being a core contributor to the development of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences ACES color profile.
In 2019 Skylab evolved again, this time to offer AVID Editing and 4K Dolby 7.1 Theatrical Screening rentals (soon to be Atmos®) in Vancouver at its new downtown location. They now provide turn-key, well-appointed editing rooms connected to AVID NEXIS® storage in a comfortable, secure and modern facility.
Skylab continues to build on its relationships with studios like NETFLIX, SONY, and MRC who have housed their editorial departments in Skylab’s facilities over the years.
Skylab is located in one of the best parts of the city – Vancouver’s trendy Gastown – with its fun shops, great cafes and some of the best restaurants going.
If you’re looking for post-production services to go along with your editing and screening needs, Skylab would like to recommend Elemental Post. One of Vancouver’s best boutique facilities, Elemental offers color-grading, DCP packages, sound mixing – all under one roof.
